3,600 years ago, an ancient Oracle known as Pythia wrote about the exile and rebirth of the human race. Her teachings were written upon a sacred scroll, telling the story of the twelve great tribes and the civilization they would create. Those teachings, those words, gave life to the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.
But Pythia also foretold our doom: "All this has happened before. All this will happen again."
The Twelve Colonies of Kobol were twelve distinct worlds located in a remote part of our galaxy. For 2,000 years they were home to the descendants of humans participating in the exodus of Kobol. For most of the two millennia that these worlds were inhabited, the Twelve Colonies consisted of multiple sovereign states but, during the final fifty-two years leading up to the fall of the colonies, all twelve comprised a single state known as the United Colonies of Kobol. After the settlement, the colonies slowly began to prosper and eventually gave birth to a race of cybernetic lifeforms known as Cylons.
They walked among us, they worked alongside us, they became part of our families. Then one day, they evolved... they rebelled... They rose up and killed their creators.
Cylon and man engaged in a bitter twelve year conflict that ravaged both species, only to abruptly end when the Cylons ceased hostilities and offered to sign an armistice. With the signing of the Cimtar Peace Accords and the creation of Armistice Station near the border of Colonial territory, man and machine parted ways allowing the Colonies to rebuild and their people to regroup.
But now, many years later, man's creations have returned and waged a devastating war on their creators home planets. Setting off countless nuclear warheads and destroying the vast majority of the colonial fleet in orbit, the fall of the colonies was complete.
Now, life as we know it is at an end. The twelve colonies of Kobol, prosperous and deprived alike, are gone - wiped out by our own creations. The human race has been reduced to a ragtag group of misfits travelling the stars in search of a new home. We know of ships who fled the war zone, we know there are survivors. It will be our mission to reunite as many of the human race as possible and find a new home.
But Pythia was right; it happened before and now, years later, it has happened again.

On the eve of the entire Colonial Fleet coming to a standstill for the live broadcast of the Battlestar Galactica's decommissioning ceremony, the Battlestar Prometheus waits at the Scorpia Shipyards before undergoing her scheduled six month overhaul. Most of the crew is taking some much needed shore leave. However, orders come down from Picon Fleet Headquarters for the Prometheus to ready herself for a new mission: a routine patrol in the merchant shipping lanes. The crew is recalled, and the scheduled overhaul canceled. As the ship leaves the dock, she leaves behind the new Command Navigation Program upgrades. It seems the Admiralty believes the Prometheus can accomplish her mission without them.
